Jelena Jankovic took a major step toward capturing her first career Grand Slam singles title on Wednesday, battling her way past Yaroslava Shvedova in the quarterfinals of the French Open 7-5, 6-4 and now advancing to the semifinals at Roland Garros.
Jankovic trailed in winners 19-30 but came up with the big hits when it mattered most as she capitalized on six of her eight break point opportunities. The Serb also took advantage of a weak second serve from Shvedova, scoring on 63 percent of those offerings.
Jankovic’s best finish at the French Open has been a semifinals appearance, something she accomplished in 2007 and 2008 before falling to Justine Henin and Ana Ivanovic. Her best Grand Slam singles finish was a finals appearance at the U.S. Open in 2008.
