Fosamax Side Effects Get Attention of Product Liability Lawyers

Recent medical studies have shown that usage of Fosamax, a drug intended to treat osteoporosis, may cause femur fractures and osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). Fosamax, produced by Merck, was FDA approved in 1995. The lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are investigating potential cases against Merck regarding the dangerous side effects of Fosamax and are offering free confidential legal consultations to patients who believe their femur fractures and ONJ are a result of Fosamax use.

Fosamax and Femur Fractures

Fosamax has been linked to fractures of the femur that occur during low risk activities by long time users. This is highly unusual given that the femur is one of the hardest bones in the body to fracture due to its strength. Most users report they had been taking Fosamax for over five years before these fractures occur. The FDA reached out to Fosamax in 2008 regarding femur fractures. Sixteen months later, Merck issued a warning in the Fosamax package citing “adverse events.” In March 2010, the FDA released a drug safety communication explaining the link between Fosamax and potential femur fractures.

Fosamax and Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ)

Osteonecrosis of the jaw, also referred to as “dead jaw,” is a serious bone condition in which lack of blood flow to the area causes the jawbone’s tissue to deteriorate.  A prolonged absence of adequate blood supply can eventually lead to the collapse of the jawbone.

Fosamax Lawsuits

Recently, there have been multiple lawsuits brought against Merck for a failure to properly warn users about the dangerous side effects of Fosamax, including ONJ and femur fractures.  Our Fosamax lawyers expect the number of Fosamax lawsuits to dramatically increase.
