Gunman Opens Fire in Northwest England, at least 12 Killed and Dozens Injured

A 52-year-old taxi driver went on a rampage in northwest England on Wednesday, gunning down a colleague before driving through the countryside and opening fire on people he came across. At least 12 people are confirmed dead in the attack and as many as 25 others suffered injuries.

The carnage started in the town of Whitehaven in Cumbria when Derrick Bird shot and killed a colleague and only ended when police discovered the body of Bird in a wooded area, dead from what was believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In between the initial shooting and the discovery of Bird’s body police have said as many as 30 separate crime scenes now exist in what is now the deadliest mass shooting in England since 1987. In that shooting 16 people in Berkshire were killed and while 12 have been confirmed dead in Wednesday’s attack a number of the injured are said to be in critical condition.
