Myron Cope, Legendary Voice of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dies at 79

Legendary voice of the Pittsburgh Steelers and creator of the “Terrible Towel” Myron Cope has died after a series of respiratory problems and heart falure. He was 79.

Prior to joining the Steelers broadcast team Cope was a highly respected writer for Sports Illustrated as well as the Saturday Evening Post. By 1970 he found his way into the Pittsburgh booth and for the next 35 years he became the definitive voice of Steelers.

In 1975 Cope introduced the “Terrible Towel” to the sports world, a gimmick that has found its way into just about every stadium and arena regardless of sport. Cope encouraged Steelers fans to bring these towels to an upcoming playoff game as a means of rallying support.

Cope retired from the Steelers booth in 2005. He was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame and received an award from the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
