Teen Academic Summer Camp Has the Secret Ingredient to Inspire Teens

In her newest book, Bobbi DePorter, a world leader in youth achievement, provides an inside look into SuperCamp to show how this teen academic summer camp creates a dynamic shift in the lives of teens

“Her report cards are alright with grades no lower than C’s, but I know she can do better,” complained one mom. “Connie isn’t really trying to do her best; she’s just skating by.” Does this sound like your student? Bright, intelligent, but…bringing home mediocre grades. No longer trying to get anything extra out of class, much less what the teacher is hoping to offer.

Many parents are finding themselves in a similar situation as they begin to look for summer enrichment programs that can help their children achieve their full potential. A new book out by Quantum Learning Network President, Bobbi DePorter, The Seven Biggest Teen Problems And how to turn them into Strengths, gives parents concrete ideas on what they can do and goes inside the company’s famed SuperCamp to reveal the secret ingredient the summer camp uses to motivate and inspire teens.

SuperCamp is a 10-day co-ed residential summer camp that helps kids enhance such academic skills as reading, writing, test/note taking, and memory/study strategies, while developing life skills in the areas of communication, relationships, leadership, self-esteem, confidence, goal setting, and motivation. “A big part of what makes SuperCamp work so well, the secret ingredient, if you will, is the series of mini-successes we orchestrate for the kids at camp,” said DePorter. “It is these mini-success moments that create the shift or change in students and the motivation to excel.”

“At SuperCamp, we teach learning skills that can be applied to any subject and identify the learning style and strategies that work best for each student,” said Chicka Elloy, SuperCamp Program Director and a book contributor. “As proof that what we do works, we’re now seeing many second-generation SuperCampers enrolling in our programs.” Additional proof comes from studies with former SuperCamp participants that show 73 percent of graduates improved their grades, 84 percent increased their self-esteem and 98 percent continued using the skills they were taught after camp.

SuperCamp teaches 8 Keys of Excellence: Integrity, Failure Leads to Success, Speak with Good Purpose, This Is It!, Commitment, Ownership, Flexibility and Balance. DePorter developed the 8 Keys years ago by studying successful people and identifying the traits and principles they shared. These 8 Keys are woven throughout the pages of The Seven Biggest Teen Problems.

SuperCamp provides four grade-specific programs: a Youth Forum for kids entering grades 4 and 5, Junior Forum for kids entering grades 6 to 8, Senior Forum for kids entering grades 9 to 12, and Quantum U for high school grads through college seniors. Each program is customized to the learning needs and socialization skills of the particular age and grade level. SuperCamp is held at eight colleges throughout the U.S. and in several countries worldwide. Now in its twenty-sixth year, SuperCamp has graduated over 45,000 students.

Bobbi DePorter has spent nearly 30 years in education, beginning in the late 1970’s when she studied with Dr. Georgi Lozanov, father of accelerated learning. She first applied these methods to a highly successful business school before turning her focus to teach children how to learn with SuperCamp in 1982. Bobbi has impacted over 2 million kids through school programs for students, teachers and administrators and with such books as Quantum Teaching, Quantum Success and The 8 Keys of Excellence.
