Freak Truck Accident in Dallas Kills Parra, Simonelli

Ashley Parra, a 20-year old college student, was killed in a freak accident in Dallas, Texas Wednesday. Parra is one of the two reported deaths.

An 18-wheeler tumbled 14 feet off a Woodall Rodgers Freeway ramp in downtown Dallas and crushed a car passing underneath.

Parra and David Simonelli, 38, the truck driver, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident shortly before 3 p.m. along Continental Avenue, below the ramp that leads onto northbound Interstate 35E, police said.

Police said it appears the truck's load of metal piping shifted as it rounded the curved ramp. The truck fell over the barrier on the ramp and slammed into the outer concrete wall of I-35E on the way down.

The gray Ford Focus that Parra was driving was headed east on Continental Avenue at that moment, police said.

"I've never seen anything like it," Dallas police Sgt. Gil Cerda said in an interview with the Dallas Morning News. "Another vehicle falling on your vehicle as you're traveling is just unbelievable."

Parra was a political science major at the University of North Texas.

Simonelli was working for Texas Land & Air Co. for about a month.
