John McCain Facing Presidential Eligibility Questions Due to Overseas Birth

Republican front-runner and almost certain nominee for the 2008 presidential race is once again facing questions related to his eligibility for the country’s highest position due to his birth outside the United States.

McCain was born on a military installation in the Panama Canal Zone in 1936 while his father was serving with the U.S. Navy.

According to the United States Constitution eligibility for the office of the president is limited to “natural-born citizens,” leaving McCain’s birthplace in question.

It is unlikely that McCain, a Vietnam War veteran and long-time U.S. senator, would be ruled ineligible but the situation could become an issue for legal experts as the constitutional wording has never been fully challenged.
