Francesca Schiavone has moved into the finals of the 2010 French Open after Elene Dementieva was forced to retire following the end of the first set on Thursday. Schiavone took the opening set 7-6 (7-3) and shortly after her Russian opponent revealed she could no longer go on.
Schiavone was playing in her first career Grand Slam semifinals on Thursday and didn’t look the least bit nervous as she used a strong first serve to control the pace of the opening set. Rather than put too much pressure on herself the Italian allowed Dementieva to do herself in as the 24 unforced errors, including four double fault, proved fatal.
Schiavone’s best showing at a Grand Slam prior to the 2010 French Open was a quarterfinals appearance at the 2009 Wimbledon as well as the 2003 U.S. Open. She reached the quarterfinals of the French Open back in 2001 but hadn’t made it past the fourth round since.
