Narconon Clients Interviewed on Television Newscast
Drug Rehab Clients Tell of Experiences with Oxycontin Abuse
In a recent TV broadcast, Narconon Drug Rehab clients interviewed by a local news channel described their struggles with prescription drug addiction.
In the aftermath of the death of Heath Ledger caused by an overdose of prescription drugs, and the resultant national media attention, an investigative news reporter approached Narconon of Georgia and asked if he could interview clients who had problems with prescription drugs. The clients were eager to share the human side of this problem with viewers and parents and share their stories in the hopes others could avoid falling into the same trap.
One client stated on camera, “I started with Oxycontins (a prescription pain killer) and moved on to heroin.” Another told viewers, “The cravings are very bad, it makes you steal, lie, anything to get the drug.”
Mary Rieser, Executive Director for Narconon Drug Rehab in GA, stated: “With prescription drugs selling on the black market for as much as eighty dollars a pill, and with the onset of terrible withdrawal symptoms that accompany not having the drug, it is very easy to see why people are driven to desperate acts to obtain the drug.
“Parents should be very aware of what they have in their medicine cabinet. Any signs of drug abuse, including apathy, emotional problems, grades drifting down for no apparent reason, should be investigated. You don’t want someone you love getting addicted to Oxycontin or other prescription drugs. It can lead to terrible pain and eventually death.
“Anyone having problems with prescription drug abuse should get help immediately.”
According to the DEA Agent in Charge, Rod Benson, also interviewed in the newscast, “Prescription drug abuse is trending up in Georgia and across the country. (Prescription drugs) are highly addictive. While marijuana is still the main introductory drug problem, prescription drug abuse is number two and is on the rise.”
