BP has cut the ruptured pipe from a leaking well that has been spewing millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico and will now attempt to place a cap over the well as a means of containing the spill.
That cap is expected to be lowered to the well within the next couple of hours and is the latest attempt by BP to contain what has become the worst oil spill disaster in U.S. history. Earlier in the day BP said it would pay for the construction of six sand barriers that would act as a barrier, protecting the Louisiana wetlands from the massive oil slick.
Addressing the sand barrier construction BP said it was “committed to implementing the most effective measures to protect the coastline of Louisiana.”
The oil slick has continued to grow in size since the April 20 explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon oil rig resulted in 11 workers being killed and the well rupturing.
BP has taken the brunt of the blame for the disaster and has already paid out nearly one billion in clean up costs with that figure expected to rise significantly.
