Irishman Regains Sight With Osteo Odonto Keratoprosthesis

An Irishman who has been blind for two years has regained his sight after having an eye operation called Osteo Odonto Keratoprosthesis. Bob McNichol lost his sight after an explosion of red hot liquid aluminum at a re-cycling plant in 2005.

“I thought I was going to be blind for the rest of my life,” said the 57-year-old. Doctors told him there was nothing they could do for him.  McNichol said he heard about the Osteo operation and decided to try it. The operation involves using a tooth from the patient to create a support for an artificial cornea.

Dr. Christopher Liu at the Sussex Eye Hospital in England performed the operation using a tooth from McNichol’s 23-year-old son.

“Now I have enough sight got me to get around and I can watch television. I have come out from complete darkness to be able to do simple things,” McNichol says.
