A new treatment for mesothelioma cancer utilizing microRNA is in the midst of being studied by Rosetta Genomics and New York University Langone Medical Center.

The microRNA involved in the study is miR-31. Researchers believe that this could be the answer mesothelioma victims and doctors have been looking for to treat the asbestos-caused cancer. MicroRNA has already shown to reduce the development of tumors and suppress the spread of breast cancer.

President and CEO of Rosetta Genomics, Kenneth A. Berlin, notes the significance the study could have for the treatment of the deadly cancer. “Over the past several years, microRNAs have been hailed as one of the most significant scientific and medical discoveries. They have been described as the body’s ‘master switches,’ holding significant potential for therapeutic applications and have been shown to be highly sensitive and specific biomarkers. This latest publication is another demonstration of microRNAs’ potential role in cancer therapeutics and details the significant impact a single microRNA can have on disease course.”

The probability that mesothelioma patients will survive the disease is unlikely. If diagnosed within the first 12 months of developing initial symptoms, chances of survival improve but are not guaranteed. Current treatments include radiation therapy and surgery but many have failed to help those who have had the disease for an extended period of time. The use of microRNA could mean the end of suffering for mesothelioma victims and their families.

If you have mesothelioma or believe you may be at risk for developing the cancer, obtain legal counsel from a mesothelioma lawyer immediately in order to receive compensation for your disease. A mesothelioma lawyer will contact former and current employers, find medical coverage for you and stand by you in your fight against the cancer. The longer you wait to seek help, the less your chances of beating mesothelioma.
