Mike Smith, Lead Singer of The Dave Clark Five, Dies at Age 64

Mike Smith, lead singer of the 1960s sensation The Dave Clark Five, died on Thursday from complications related to pneumonia. Smith was 64.

The dynamic frontman placed The Dave Clark Five at the top of the charts with the single “Over and Over” in 1965 and the band had a string of top ten hits that included “Bits and Pieces,” “Because,” “Glad All Over,” “Can’t You See That She’s Mine,” “Catch Us if You Can,” “I Like it Like That,” and “You Got What it Takes.”

Smith suffered a crippling spinal cord injury in 2003 after falling from a fence at his home in Spain. That incident left him paralyzed below the ribs. Shortly after the accident Smith was moved to a hospital outside London where he stayed until last December. He moved out of the hospital at the beginning of the year but remained in close proximity to the hospital.

Smith was to be in New York for the March 10 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies which will to honor the band.
