Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said Thursday that despite being born in the Panama Canal Zone, he can still run for president because Barry Goldwater's candidacy for the White House 44 years ago.
"Barry Goldwater was born in Arizona when it was a territory. Arizona was a territory, and it went all the way to the Supreme Court," McCain told reporters.
Panama Canal Zone was a U.S. territory at the time of McCain's birth on Aug. 29, 1936.
The Constitution says only a "natural-born citizen" may serve as president, but McCain said it was long ago settled that someone born in a U.S. territory of U.S. citizen parents is qualified.
Both of McCain's parents were American-born citizens.
