The death sentence imposed on Ali Hassan al-Majid, known as “Chemical Ali,” cleared its final hurdle on Friday after Iraqi president Jalal Talabani and two vice presidents endorsed the order.
“Chemical Ali” was sentenced to die last June after being found guilty of carrying out the mass genocide of Kurdish civilians in the 1980s. More than 200,000 Kurds died in what was called Operation Anfal, former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s plan to rid the country of the ethnic group.
Hussein had faced charges related to the genocide but he was executed in Dec. 2006 following a conviction related to the ordered deaths of more than 140 Shiite Muslims in 1982.
Al-Majid,a cousin of Hussein, can be hung at any point over the next 30 days.
