The body of former top model and activist Katoucha Niane was discovered in the Seine River on Thursday, nearly one month after she disappeared. Earlier this month French police opened a missing persons case but there had been no signs of foul play. Police had suspected that the model fell into the river while she was returning to her house boat following a party.
While Katoucha rose to fame as a top model for designers like Yves Saint Laurent, Thierry Mugler, Paco Rabanne and Christian Lacroix it was her work as an activist that truly defined the 47-year-old.
The Guinean-born Katoucha was a victim of genital mutilation at the age of nine and by the time she was 17 she fled the African country and arrived in France. After more than a decade as a top runway model Katoucha retired from modeling in 1994 and dedicated her time to speaking out against female genital mutilation.
