Japanese Lawmakers Elect Finance Minister Naoto Kan as New PM Following Resignation of Yukio Hatoyama

Japanese lawmakers have elected finance minister Naoto Kan as the country’s new prime minister, replacing Yukio Hatoyama who resigned from his post just two days ago.

In becoming the fifth prime minister in three years Kan pledged economic reform and a greater focus on social welfare programs, both are areas that Hatoyama had been addressing when he surprisingly announced his resignation.

That resignation came in large part because of Hatoyama’s failure to live up to his greatest campaign pledge, the removal of a U.S. military base on the island of Okinawa. Once elected Hatoyama found that task to be impossible and he was heavily criticized by the people and rival politicians.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for the Democratic Party of Japan who earned an historic victory in the 2009 elections following nearly 50 years of conservative leadership. Despite Hatoyama’s resignation Kan has promised to continue with the reform programs laid out by the former PM

Kan will have little time to get things started as he is expected to name his cabinet in the coming days before being sworn in by Emperor Akihito next week.
