Robin Soderling very nearly suffered a major letdown on Friday following his remarkable quaretrfinals victory over Roger Federer but the Swede hung tough and knocked off Tomas Berdych in five sets 6-3, 3-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the French Open finals for the second year on a row.
Soderling was able to overcome 63 unforced errors to sneak past Berdych who displayed a powerful serve but had difficulty putting his fist offerings in play. When he did the Czech was dominant as he scored points on 75 percent of those plays, 21 of those points coming the way of an ace. Despite the daunting serve Soderling was able to hang in and capitalize on his opportunities, breaking Berdych’s serve six times.
Soderling had never made it past the third round of a Grand Slam prior to the 2009 French Open where he eventually finished runner up to Roger Federer. He then reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2009, a personal best and then reached the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open the same year.
