Turkey Threatens to Reduce Ties with Israel Following Deadly Raid on Gaza Aid Ship

Turkey has threatened to reduce its economic and defense ties with Israel following a controversial raid on a ship carrying aid to Gaza. That raid left nine people dead, mostly Turkish activists, and has put Israel on the defensive as the international community condemned the acts.

While Israel has been heavily criticized for raiding the ship the soldiers have insisted that they attacked first and had only been defending themselves when shots were fired.

Despite those claims the raid has drawn Israel into a negative light and Turkey has since threatened to reexamine its relationship with their one-time ally. Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc has said his country would be “assessing deals with Israel,” a statement that hints that some kind of action would be taken.

Israeli commandoes had stormed the ship to inspect the cargo, wanting to ensure there were no weapons or goods being transported. Israel instituted the blockade shortly after Hamas took power in Gaza and have taken a number of steps designed to control the flow of goods into the area.

While the aftermath of Monday’s raid is still unfolding Israel could be facing yet another confrontation as a second ship, the MV Rachel Corrie, is heading toward Gaza with the intention of dropping aid that includes a number of items banned by Israel.
