Hall of Famer John Wooden Hospitalized

Legendary UCLA Basketball Coach in Hospital

According to a report from ESPN.com, legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden is "resting comfortably" at the Ronald Reagan UCLA medical center after having been admitted on May 26 because of dehydration. Both the Los Angeles Times and the an LA TV station described Wooden's condition on Thursday as "grave." The university's statement from Friday suggests that his condition is perhaps not as grave anymore, but no precise information about his condition will be released at the request of his family.

John Wooden is a legendary basketball coach who led the UCLA Bruins to 10 NCAA national championship titles in a span of 12 years from 1963 to 1975. From 1964 to 1974, his Bruins won 38 consecutive NCAA tournament games, a feat that has yet to be matched. Because of his amazing contributions to the sport, Wooden is a member of both the National Basketball Hall of Fame and the College Basketball Hall of Fame. In fact, he was the first person ever to be enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach.

Given the amazing achievements of this Hall of Fame coach, a number of NBA figures have had kind words for Wooden since he was hospitalized last week. Former Bruins star and Hall of Famer Bill Walton said, "He's the greatest. We love him." Derek Fisher, who is currently helping the Los Angeles Lakers battle the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals, said, "My heart goes out to him and his family. He's meant so much to the game of basketball and to Los Angelenos in particular. I don't think there's anyone other than maybe
Magic Johnson who can even come close to being as important in the history of basketball here in Southern California as John Wooden." Finally, NBA commissioner David Stern said, "We decided that we would not declare his obituary now, other than to say that he's the winningest coach in our history, four 30-0 seasons, and the ultimate aficionado of our game. We hope he's in peace right now, and we'll wait on events."
