Medvedev Expected to Succeed Putin as Russia Heads to Polls

Russian President Vladimir Putin has already endorsed Dmitry Medvedev as his successor as president but now it will be up to the Russian people as voters took to the polls on Sunday.

Medvedev is widely considered a lock for the country’s top position as he faces little in the way of competition from other candidates and with Putin’s backing he gained instant credibility.

As part of his campaign pledge Medvedev has said he would offer Putin the position of prime minister, a post many believe would ensure the two-term president would continue to hold some power.

Medvedev is seen as a moderate but that could be met with some confrontation inside the Kremlin where many still share anti-West sentiments.
