Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez has sent thousands of troops to the border of Columbia in response to the murder of a top rebel leader on Saturday.
Chavez also ordered the Venezuelan embassy in Bogota closed and has withdrawn all personnel from the neighboring country.
The move comes just one day after Raul Reyes and 16 other members of a rebel group were killed by Columbia’s military in Ecuador. In essence Chavez declared that Columbia “invaded Ecuador, flagrantly violated Ecuador's sovereignty.”
Chavez has long been at odds with Columbia and its U.S. backed government in Bogota. The controversial leader has gone as far as to call the country “a terrorist state” and said Columbia could launch South America into large-scale war.
