The Israeli military has intercepted an aid ship destined for Gaza, forcing the vessel to dock at the Israeli port of Ashdod and searching its content for illegal cargo.
According to reports soldiers were able to board the Rachel Corrie without resistance, in stark contrast to an event five days ago that put Israel in a bad light. In that incident nine activists aboard a Turkish aid ship destined for Gaza were killed when Israeli soldiers boarded their vessel.
Israel had warned those aboard the Rachel Corrie that they would not be allowed to carry their cargo directly to the Gaza Strip, insisting their cargo would have to be inspected. There are a number of items that Israel has banned from allowing into Gaza due to fears they could be used by Hamas leadership and its militants to launch attacks.
Israel has insisted their goal last week was to simply board the Turkish vessel and search its contents and only engaged in gunfire after they were attacked by the activists on board. The activists on the Rachel Corrie had previously said they would offer up no resistance if the Israeli military attempted to board their ship but they condemned the act regardless.
Mary Hughes, co-founder of the Free Gaza Movement, addressed the recent incident saying Israel had “once again went into international water and violently boarded a boat and forced people against their will to go to Israel, when all we wanted was to be left to go to Gaza, which is our goal.”
