U.S. President Barack Obama has announced his nomination for new director of national intelligence, encouraging Congress to confirm retired Gen. James Clapper as the country’s intelligence chief.
If Clapper is confirmed he would be taking over a position left vacant by Adm. Dennis Blair who resigned from the post last month after a series of security failures left him exposed to public criticism. Blair’s resignation was not contested by Obama who had been pushing the DNI in that direction.
While Obama has nominated Clapper his confirmation is far from a done deal as many have expressed doubt over his ability to manage the position. In the past he has displayed a combative style during hearings and many say he would have a difficult time working with other strong personalities within the intelligence community.
There are those who do support Obama’s nomination though, one of them being Senator Joe Lieberman, chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, who has said he looked forward to working with Clapper “to determine whether the DNI needs additional authorities in order to lead and integrate the intelligence community.”
