Gloria Steinem, a renowned feminist, made a statement Sunday, belittling Sen. John McCain's time as a POW. Steinem is also a supporter of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY).
While in Austin, TX, Steinem said, "Suppose John McCain had been Joan McCain and Joan McCain had got captured, shot down and been a POW for eight years?"
Steinem said the media would ask "'What did you do wrong to get captured? What terrible things did you do while you were there as a captive for eight years?"
McCain spent five-and-a-half years as a POW at the hands of the North Vietnamese during the Vietnam War.
Referring to McCain's time in captivity, Steinem said "I mean, hello? This is supposed to be a qualification to be president? I don’t think so."
Many political pundits think Steinem's comments have hurt Clinton's campaign.
