Rafael Nadal captured his fifth French Open title on Sunday, knocking off Robin Soderling in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 at Roland Garros for his seventh career Grand Slam crown. For Nadal Sunday’s result was a bit of revenge as it was Soderling who knocked him out of last year’s French Open in the fourth round.
Nadal played nearly flawless tennis as he committed just 16 unforced errors and collected points on 74 percent of his first serves he put in play. The Spaniard never allowed his serve to be broken while he jumped on the 45 unforced errors committed by Soderling.
Nadal had won four straight French Open titles before being upset by Soderling in 2009. Sunday’s win gave him his fifth French Open title and his seventh career Grand Slam singles title. He also has an Australian Open title under his belt as well as a Wimbledon championship, leaving only the U.S. Open as the only Grand Slam event the 24-year-old Spaniard hasn’t won.
