Israel Rejects Proposed International Commission on Deadly Aid Ship Raid

Israel plans to reject an international investigation into the deadly raid on an ship carrying aid to the Gaza Strip, saying they had the ability to conduct their own investigation into their military action without the help of an independent commission.

According to reports UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon introduced the proposal to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

That proposal has apparently been pushed aside as Israel has said they will set up their own inquiry into the events that transpired. Nine activists were killed in last week’s raid when Israeli soldiers boarded the aid flotilla as it headed toward Gaza.

While the passengers aboard the Turkish vessel said the soldiers initiated the confrontation Israel has insisted they were attacked by the activists as they attempted to board. Israel has refused to apologize for the incident and maintain the violence was started by the activists.

Israel has stepped up its blockade of the Gaza Strip since 2007 when Hamas took power in the area. Israel has refused to allow any goods or weapons into Gaza that could be used by militants to launch attacks.
