Tornadoes and Thunderstorms Rip Through Midwest, at least Five Killed in Ohio as Homes and Buildings Leveled

Powerful tornadoes and thunderstorms ripped through the Midwest overnight, leaving at least five people dead in northwest Ohio and causing damage in Michigan and Illinois.

While no tornadoes were reported to have touched down in Ohio at least 50 homes were destroyed and several left badly damaged as thunderstorms rolled through Lake Township. Among the hardest hit was Lake Township High School where graduating seniors were scheduled to have their ceremony on Sunday.

The damage stretched into Illinois where there had been a confirmed tornado touchdown just southwest of Chicago. There have been reports of major damage to homes in the city of Streator and the city’s mayor has said as many as 17 people were taken to hospitals with injuries caused by the twister.
