BP Containment Cap on Ruptured Oil Well in Gulf of Mexico Showing Promise

The containment cap placed on the ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico is now capturing more than half the oil that has been pouring into the waters says BP CEO Tony Hayward.

According to Hayward as much as 10,000 barrels of oil are now being funneled to the surface, more than half the estimated 12,000 to 19,000 barrels of oil that are said to be gushing from the ruptured well. Hayward has said the success of the containment cap, coupled with a second measure to be put in place later this week, should help contain the “vast majority” of the oil.

For more than a month and a half oil has been spewing from a ruptured well on the Gulf floor following an explosion aboard the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. Experts have called the spill the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history, destroying wildlife, ruining wetlands and affecting the coastlines of Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi as well as the economies that rely upon those coastlines.

Florida’s coastline could soon fall in that category as officials have predicted the existing oil in the water will soon enter currents that will carry it from the state’s peninsula down the coast and onto the east coast.

While the situation appears dire Hayward has insisted “We're going to clean-up the oil, we're going to remediate any environmental damage and we are going to return the Gulf coast to the position it was in prior to this event. That's an absolute commitment, we will be there long after the media has gone, making good on our promises.”

An estimated 20 to 45 million gallons of oil have poured into the Gulf since the April 20 explosion on the Deepwater Horizon; an explosion that killed eleven oil workers.
