Australian Hostages Freed After Hijacker Killed by Chinese Police

A Chinese man who took ten Australians hostage on a tour bus in Beijing was shot and killed by police after a standoff lasting nearly three hours.

The man, who had strapped explosives to his body, had freed nine hostages earlier in the crisis but kept a 48-year-old woman aboard the bus until the end. That end came when police determined they would have to shoot the hijacker in order to secure the safety of the woman.

The group of Australian tourists had been on their way to Shanghai when the man commandeered the bus. It was unclear what the motive for the attack was or what demands the man made.

All ten Australian hostages were safe and uninjured.
