South Africa Deports Ten Suspected Soccer Hooligans Ahead of World Cup Kickoff

South Africa has reportedly deported ten suspected soccer hooligans, saying the men had been planning to disrupt the World Cup set to kickoff later this week.

All ten men were from Argentina and were arrested at Johannesburg airport after authorities discovered they had been on an entry blacklist. The men allegedly belong to a notorious gang known as Barrabravas and had travelled within a larger group of fans hoping to avoid detection.

A statement released by South African police following the arrest and deportations read “Intelligence indicated that these persons would commit acts of public disorder, engage in acts of violence and provoke conflict with certain fans of opponent teams and other groups from Argentina during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.”

The World Cup, the first ever on the African continent, gets underway on Friday.
