The situation along the border of Venezuela and Columbia remains tense as Hugo Chavez continues to bolster his country’s military presence in response to a Columbian military strike against rebel troops in Ecuador over the weekend.
Chavez openly condemned Columbia’s strike against the leftist rebels, declaring the assault an invasion and “flagrantly violated Ecuador's sovereignty.” Ecuador has also responded to the Columbian strike by sending troops to the border.
Columbia has said they confiscated a laptop from a rebel leader killed in the attack that showed a link between the leftist guerrillas and Chavez. The Venezuelan president has long been at odds with Columbia, declaring the country a “terrorist state” with close ties to the U.S. government.
