Metallica to Perform Live at Bergenhus Festning July 16

Metallica will be performing live in Bergen, Normandy at Bergenhus Festning on Wednesday, July 16 at 8:00 pm.

Formed in 1981, Metallica started in Los Angeles, California after the drummer, Lars Ulrich, placed an add in a local newspaper to start a band.  James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine and Ron McGovney responded to the advertisement.  With Ularich on drums, Hetfield on rhythm guitar and vocals, Mustaine on lead guitar and McGovney on bass, the band worked together to develop the heavy metal rock band.  Later on, McGovney and Mustaine were replaced by Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammet causing a riff between Metallica and Mustaine.  Cliff Burton was later replaced by Jason Newsted after he was tragically killed in a bus accident.  Newsted was later replaced by Robert Trujillo in 2003 after he left in 2001.

Known for their fast tempos and aggressive musicianship, Metallica quickly became one of the founders of the “thrash metal” music genre.  The release of their 1986 album, Master of Puppets, is said to be one of the most influential albums of the time.  With a strong fan base in the underground music community, the band continued to rise to fame with the release of their 1991 self titled album, featuring a number one on the Billboard 200.

Despite the band’s growing popularity, critics began to accuse the band of going mainstream.  Many say that the band “sold out” with the release of their 1996 album, Load, which had “an almost alternative approach.”

In 2000, Metallica filed a lawsuit against Napster, claiming that the site gave away copyrighted material without consent.  The suite was settled and Napster became a pay to use service.
