President George W. Bush announced his endorsement of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) Wednesday after McCain won the Republican presidential nomination.
Bush made his announcement from the White House with McCain by his side.
Bush and McCain were bitter rivals during the 2000 presidential election. Since Bush has been in office over the past eight years, the two have had their share of disagreements. However, Bush talked about his admiration of McCain's character and looks to support the Republican Party with his endorsement.
"John showed incredible courage, strength of character and perseverance in order to get to this moment and that's exactly what we need in a president — somebody who can handle the tough decisions, somebody who won't flinch in the face of danger," Bush said, appearing with McCain in the Rose Garden.
Republicans will not officially nominate McCain until early September at the GOP's National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul.
McCain swept all four Republican contests on Tuesday to become his party's presumptive nominee.
McCain won primaries in Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island, giving him more than the 1,191 delegates needed to clinch the GOP nomination. McCain has amassed 1,289.
