Kevin Johnson, the former Phoenix Suns All-Star guard, has announced his candidacy for mayor of Sacramento, CA Wednesday. Johnson will challenge three-term incumbent Heather Fargo in the municipal election in June.
Johnson, 42, made the announcement at a news conference at the Guild Theater in Oak Park, the low-income Sacramento neighborhood where he grew up and the site in which Johnson has focused his urban renewal projects since his retirement from the NBA.
"We need a change in the city and I believe we need a change now," Johnson said. "As I went out the last month and talked to people around the city, folks have said to me they believe city government is nonresponsive, tired, uninspired and bureaucratic. They want something different in Sacramento. [They're] clamoring for change."
Johnson is the only competition for Fargo as Johnson has made a significant change in urban renewal throughout the city with his company, St. HOPE.
