Pacquiao Named Fighter of the Year

Filipino Boxing Great Wins Award

According to a report from the Associated Press, Filipino boxing champion Manny Pacquiao was recently named the Fighter of the Year. Pacquiao, who defeated both Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto this past year, said, "I confronted poverty by trusting God and dreaming big. I was convinced I could succeed in boxing. The boxing ring could be the breeding ground for my dreams." Pacquiao accepted the Boxing Writers Association of America Fighter of the Year award (his third) on Friday. Pacquiao has also been named Fighter of the Decade (2000-2009) by the BWAA. A newly elected Filipino congressman, Pacquiao was certainly grateful about winning the award; "Tonight I overflow with joy and gratitude. I am thankful that, just like Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier and other boxers, I decided to get into boxing."
