Stocks Fall on Continued Concerns About the Credit

Stocks tumbled Thursday as renewed concerns about the credit markets and another dose of disappointing housing numbers intensified the market's worries about the sagging economy.

Financials are near a five-year low and are leading a drop in stocks after Merrill Lynch modified terms on some notes and Thornburg Mortgage announced more problems, while Carlyle Capital was unable to meet a margin call. Retailers are adding to pressures on shares after mixed results from department stores are offsetting modestly upbeat numbers from discounters. In other news, Jobless claims fell more than forecast, and pending homes sales exceeded expectations. Treasuries are higher, and weakness in the US and hawkish comments from the European Central Bank are pressuring Europe and the dollar.

In late morning trading, the Dow fell 127.32, or 1.04 percent, to 12,127.67. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 15.49, or 1.16 percent, to 1,318.21; and the Nasdaq composite shed 13.49, or 0.59 percent, to 2,259.32.

Light, sweet crude rose to a new record Thursday after an unexpected decline in U.S. crude supplies and a widely expected decision by OPEC not to increase production. Oil recently slipped 68 cents to $103.84 per barrel.
