General Motors has issued a recall for 1.4 million
vehicles because a circuit that heats windshield wiper fluid can short and
cause a fire. The company issued a recall for the same problem in 2008. They installed
a fuse to shut off the system in the event of a short, but apparently the fuse
is not stopping shorts.
GM now plans to disable the system and give affected
customers $100 for the loss of the feature. “While our analysis shows the
number of incidents is very small compared with the number of vehicles on the
road, we want our customers to have complete peace of mind," GM's executive
director of safety said in a statement.
The recall includes the following vehicles with model
years from 2006 to 2009: the Buick Enclave and Lucerne, Cadillac CTS, DTS and
Escalade; GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon; Hummer H2, Chevrolet Avalanche,
Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe and Traverse; and Saturn Outlook.
