Rare White Killer Whale Spotted in Alaska

A rare white killer whale was spotted in the Aleutian Islands last month by researchers onboard the Oscar Dyson. The group was conducting a survey of pollock near Steller sea lion haulout sites when they seen the whale.

The whale was estimated to weigh over 10,000 pounds and was about 25 to 30 feet long.

“I had heard about this whale, but we have never been able to find it. It was quite neat to find it,” said research biologist Holly Fearnbach.”

The whale was not actually a real albino because some parts of it’s body was a subtle yellow – brown color. “When you first looked at it, it was very white,” she said. “Everybody actually came out and was taking pictures. It was a neat sighting for everybody.”
