Orangeville District School knows the value of implementing videos to promote their Specialist High Skills Major program.

Orangeville District School has announced that it will release a promotional video regarding their recently implemented ministry-approved specialized program in Culinary Arts: Hospitality and Tourism.

Created and produced by Jenny Munford and her team at Creative Bube Tube in Milton, Ontario, the created dvd will be used as an instructional tool for prospective future students interested in acquiring such skills during their high school years.

“The specialist high skills major, is a ministry-approved program that allows students to customize their high school experience to suit their unique talents and interests, while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Seconadry School Diploma,” says James Richards, Program Coordinator at Orangeville District School. “The program prepares students for real life after high school. Whether its apprenticeship training, college, university, or even direct employment in hospitality and tourism, they will be ready.”

According to a government official, Specialist High Skills Major is “about meeting the individual needs of each and every student. Schools are providing students with more opportunities to customize their high school experience and build on their strengths and interests through variety of new and enhanced learning options.”

“The Culinary Arts Program at Orangeville District School, allow students to get hands on training in service and excellence, smart serve, CPR, first aid, WHIMIS, and safe food handling,” says the Program Coordinator. In addition, the students tend an on-site greenhouse garden and learn the basics of horticulture.

Mr. Richards points out that the students who have successfully completed the program have started wonderful careers either through direct employment or post-secondary education.

“These kids have a wonderful opportunity for life-time success. We just hope that government recognizes the need for learning and continues investing in it.”

Orangeville District School is the first high school in Ontario to have a SHSM program in Culinary Arts Program implemented.
