Police have arrested 23-year-old Courtney Larrell Lockhart in the murder of Auburn University student Lauren Burk. Lockhart was arrested in Phenix City, Alabama on Friday and has been charged with capital murder during a kidnapping, capital murder during a robbery, and capital murder during an attempted rape.
Burk, who was originally from Marietta, Georgia, was found shot on a street a few miles from the university campus. The 18-year-old freshman was taken to the hospital where she later died. Police found her black Honda Civic on fire in a campus parking lot.
Burks father James posted a statement on the university’s web site thanking the police department and school. “The Burk family was so proud to have Lauren as an Auburn University student. We want to extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation for Auburn University, the city of Auburn and the Auburn Police Department. We feel very close to your community. We appreciate what everyone is doing for us and Lauren,” the statement read.
Auburn police say they do not believe Burk’s murder is connected with the shooting death of 22-year-old Eve Carson, a student at University of North Carolina, on Wednesday.
