Army Spc. Monica Lin Brown to Become 2nd Woman to Receive Silver Star

In the aftermath of a roadside bomb in Afghanistan in which five soldiers in her unit were injured 19-year-old Army Spc. Monica Lin Brown dodged gunfire and mortar explosions to reach and transport the fallen soldiers to a safe area.

For those actions the Army medic will receive the nation’s third-highest medal for valor, the Silver Star, becoming just the second woman to be so distinguished since World War II.

In a report from the Associated Press the Texas native said, “"I did not really think about anything except for getting the guys to a safer location and getting them taken care of and getting them out of there.”

The explosion occurred in April 2007 as a convoy of Humvees was traveling in the eastern Paktia province. After the explosion Brown rushed to the aid of the five soldiers injured and trapped in a vulnerable spot.

Dodging gunfire and explosions Brown reached the soldiers and administered aid and assisted in dragging them to safety.

The Army noted Brown’s “bravery, unselfish actions and medical aid rendered under fire saved the lives of her comrades and represents the finest traditions of heroism in combat.”

Brown is scheduled to be presented with the Silver Star later this month.
