Police say Courtney Lockhart, who has been charged with the murder of Auburn University student Lauren Burk, is also facing charges for an attack and robbery of a 72-year-old Georgia woman.
Newnan Police Deputy Rodney Riggs said Lockhart faces charges in Georgia including armed robbery, aggravated assault and kidnapping. Lockhart, 23, jumped the woman from behind while she was getting in her Toyota Camry at a Coweta County Wal-Mart.
Newnan police obtained the tag number of the car driven by the robber. The Chrysler Sebring belonged to Lockhart. An alert was sent to police departments in the Georgia and Alabama area. Riggs said that being able to identify the tag number was “an important part of the [Burk] case.”
Burk, 18, was found shot on the side of a road in Auburn, Alabama. Her car was later found on fire in a parking lot on the university campus. Lockhart, 23, was arrested in Phenix City, Alabama on Friday and has been charged with capital murder during a kidnapping, capital murder during a robbery, and capital murder during an attempted rape.
Lockhart’s mother apologized to Burk’s family. “I am sorry that Courtney did that…First let me say I’m sorry to the Burk family for Courtney taking, taking their child…My heart goes out to her family,” said Catherine Williams.
Lockhart is being held in jail on $250,000 bail.
