A pair of Norwegian men who had a death sentence overturned in April have once again been sentenced to death by a military tribunal in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In September 2009 Joshua French and Tjostolv Moland were found guilty of murdering their driver as well as spying for Norway and three months later they lost an appeal. That conviction was overturned in April after it was found that procedures at the military tribunal were flawed but the men once again find themselves facing a death sentence.
The convictions have been heavily criticized by the international community and been cited as further evidence that the military is incapable of carrying out justice.
Both French and Moland have maintained their innocence in the case, insisting they had nothing to do with the murder. The men had been traveling to DRC from Uganda when the motorbike they were on broke down. They told police they hired a driver to take them back to Uganda but were ambushed by gunmen on their way back and that was how their driver, Abedi Kasongo, was killed.
