Metallica will be performing in Europe through out 2008.  They will be at Levski Stadium in Sofia, Bulgaria on July 25 at 9:00 pm, following the Rock Im Park Festival at Zeppelinfeld in Nuremberg, Germany.

Founded by drummer Lars Ulrich, Metallica began in 1981, after Ulrich posted an add in a local Los Angeles newspaper to start a band.  The original lineup consisted of Dave Mustaine (lead guitar), James Hetfield (rhythm guitar and vocals) and Ron McGovney (bass).  McGovney and Mustaine were later replaced by Cliff Burton and Kirk Hammet, resulting in a bitter feud between Mustain and Metallica.  Burton was tragically killed in a bus accident.  He was replaced by Jason Newsted, until his resignation in 2001.  Robert Trujillo was later recruited to fill his place in 2003.

The band is considered on of the founders of “trash metal” and gained recognition within the world of underground music with their fast tempos and aggressive musical style.  After the release of Master of Puppets, the group gained a strong following in 1986, however, many began to question their music after the release of Load in 1996.  Critics noted the album as having “an almost alternative approach.

In 2001, the band sued Napster, claiming that the online peer file sharing website was illegally giving away copyrighted material without the band’s consent.  The case was settled and Napster quickly became a pay to use service.
