Abby Sunderland, Teen Sailing Around the World, Missing

Abby Sunderland, the California teen attempting to sail solo around the world, is missing. Sunderland, 16, last spoke to her family Thursday. She lost contact with them in a storm in the Indian Ocean. Hours later she began sending out distress signals.

A rescue effort is underway. The nearest boat, a private fishing vessel, is about 40 hours away. No other details were available.

Sunderland began her quest to be the youngest person to sail around the globe nonstop in February. The plan was thwarted in early May when she was forced to stop for repairs in South Africa.
