New York Governor Eliot Spitzer is expected to resign after announcing on Monday that he was involved in a prostitution ring.
Spitzer, a first-term Democrat, is under investigation for allegedly meeting with a prostitute in a Washington hotel named Emperors Club VIP. According to an affidavit last week, Spitzer has been identified as "Client-9".
On Monday morning, Spitzer made the announcement of his involvement in the ring. A federal wiretap has gained evidence of Spitzer's interaction with the prostitute.
The website for Emperors Club VIP displays photographs of scantily clad women with their faces hidden, along with hourly rates depending on whether the prostitutes were rated with one diamond, the lowest ranking, or seven diamonds, the highest. The most highly ranked prostitutes cost $5,500 an hour.
The Emperors Club's Web site (www.emperorsclubvip.com) has been taken down since the arrests.
If Spitzer resigns, Lieutenant Governor David Patterson will succeed him, becoming the first Black governor in New York history.
Spitzer is married to Silda Wall Spitzer. The two have three daughters: Elyssa, 18; Sarabeth, 15; and 13.
