Stocks Move Sharply Higher Amid Fed Liquidity Action

Stocks are surging to the upside after the Federal Reserve announced new measures to inject liquidity into the credit markets, easily offsetting negative sentiment from disappointing guidance from WellPoint and Texas Instruments. Elsewhere, Hovnanian Enterprises reported a wider loss, and IndyMac Bancorp said widening credit spreads will hurt 1Q results.

The Dow rose 235.52, or 2.01 percent, to 11,975.67. The index is still down more than 2,100 points from its October 2007 record high.

Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 23.18, or 1.82 percent, at 1,296.55, while the Nasdaq composite index added 38.05, or 1.75 percent, to 2,207.39.

Government bond prices fell as stocks rallied. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 3.57 percent from 3.46 percent late Monday.

Oil prices rose as high as $109.72 in premarket trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange before falling back to $107.67, down 33 cents. Speculation that rising prices for oil and other commodities will offset the falling dollar has driven oil's rally from $87 a barrel in January.

Gold prices were higher, and the dollar was mixed against other major currencies.
