Abby Sunderland Found Alive, Won’t Continue Voyage

Abby Sunderland, the teen sailor attempting to sail solo around the world, has been found alive. Sunderland began sending out distress signals Thursday after losing contact with her family during a storm in the Indian Ocean.

An aerial search team spotted Sunderland’s yacht, “Wild Eyes,” Friday. A French fishing vessel is expected to reach her within 24 hours.

“Wild Eyes is upright but her rigging is down," Laurence and Marianne Sunderland wrote on their daughter’s blog. "The weather conditions are abating. Radio communication was made and Abby reports that she is fine!"

Laurence says Abby will not be continuing her voyage. “We've got our Abigail back and the quest will be over. Knowing that she's alive and well means so much more to me than any sailing record. It's just a huge, huge relief,” he said.
