Former South African President Nelson Mandela, 91, has announced
he will not attend the opening of the World Cup due to the death of his
13-year-old great-granddaughter Zenani Mandela. Zenani died early Friday morning
in a one car accident.
According to reports, the driver of the car was arrested
for drunk driving and culpable homicide. Zenani and the unidentified driver
were leaving the World Cup kick-off concert when the accident
happened.
“It would therefore be inappropriate for him to
personally attend the FIFA World Cup opening celebrations," said an
official of the Mandela Foundation. “We are sure that South Africans and people
all over the world will stand in solidarity with Mr. Mandela and his family in
the aftermath of this tragedy.”
Zenani is the grandchild of Mandela's daughter, Zindzi Mandela. No other details were available.
